LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama football team conducted a
72-play, hour and a half scrimmage at the Tiger’s
practice facility on Sunday afternoon.
“It was a good
scrimmage for us today, being our first true scrimmage
of the year,” UWA Head Coach Bobby Wallace said. “We
didn’t put the ball on the ground or turn it over on the
offensive side of the ball. I also thought our defense
ran around well and really hit people. There are some
things that we still need to work on, but it was a good
scrimmage.”
UWA, which wrapped up
its first week of practice on Friday, has seen
dedication from veterans during the off-season and in
the first days of practice.
“We had four guys
really go through a physical change over the summer,”
said Wallace. “Alvin Garrett, Trey Thornhill, Randle
Hunt and Kurt Kennedy all worked hard and it shows. They
are in much better shape than they were when they left
this spring.”
Wallace, who is
entering his second season at UWA and 20th
overall, also commented on some newcomers that have
shined in the first days of practice.
“Cole Mason, a
transfer from Southern Miss, has looked good at
fullback. Terry Allen has also looked good at wide
receiver, after making the adjustment from quarterback
this spring,” Wallace said. “Chris Fort, a transfer from
Grambling State, has proven to be a solid offensive
lineman. He played at Huffman High School in Birmingham,
Ala. and was a part of those great offensive lines.”
West Alabama, which is
coming off its first winning season in 14 years, opens
on Thursday, August 30th, as the Tigers
travel to Samford. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Tickets are priced at $12.00 for all ages and can be
purchased through the UWA Ticket Office (205) 652-3784. |
