BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The
University of West Alabama’s DeAntuan Matthews was named
Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for
his efforts in the 45-43 triple overtime loss at
Ouachita Baptist this weekend.
Matthews is the fourth different
UWA defender to take home laurels this season, turning
in a career performance with a game-high 16 total
tackles, led by 13 solo stops. The Birmingham,
Ala.-native was a frequent visitor in OBU’s backfield,
posting 3.0 tackles for a loss of 15 yards along with
2.0 sacks for 14 yards. The junior also forced one
fumble and broke up one pass.
Matthews joins defensive teammates
Garry Pack, Octavious Sumbry and Jeremy May as
recipients of the conference’s weekly honors.
UWA’s four Defensive Player
of the Week honors is the most by any school in an
individual weekly category presented by the conference.
The four is tied for second most in the conference by
one team.
West Alabama concludes the season
on Saturday, Nov. 8, as the Tigers host in-state foe
North Alabama. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. |
