Former Tiger, Samuels, honored by Arena Football League

TAMPA, Fla. – Former University of West Alabama football standout, Lawrence Samuels, has been named Ironman of the Week in the Arena Football League for his performance in Tampa Bay Storms victory against the Arizona Rattlers.

The 14-year AFL veteran scored two touchdowns and intercepted one pass to help the Storm to a 59-50 win over the Rattlers on Friday.  The wide receiver/linebacker also made four tackles including one for a loss while starting as the jack linebacker on the way to earning Ironman of the Game honors.

A member of the Tiger football team from 1989-92, Samuels’ interception during Arizona’s first possession of the second quarter led to Tampa Bay outscoring the Rattlers 28-20 in the quarter and gave the Storm at 38-34 lead at the half.  Samuels also converted three consecutive first downs on the Storm’s final drive to maintain possession and run out the clock.

Samuels is currently third on the team in receiving yards with 812, as his 10 touchdowns are fourth best for the Storm. He has also recorded 24.5 tackles on the season, which is fifth best on the team with his three interceptions being second for the Storm.

Tampa Bay returns to action on Saturday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. EST to host the Philadelphia Soul at the St. Pete Times Forum.
