UWA Football Prepares for First Road Test at Harding

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama football team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 6, as the Tigers (1-0) travel to Searcy, Ark. to face Harding. Kickoff at First Security Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The game will be carried on WZNJ 106.5-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu. The contest can also be viewed by accessing www.pennatlantic.com.

Saturday’s contest marks the 14th meeting in a series that began in 1961. Harding holds the advantage in the series at 8-5. UWA claimed the inaugural meeting in a 14-10 victory in Livingston.  HU evened the series in 1962, before UWA won three straight. The Bisons claimed wins in 1996 and 1999. HU has won five straight with the last Tiger win coming in 2000.

West Alabama takes to the road in its contest away from Tiger Stadium this season. UWA looks to snap a six-game, road losing streak that dates back to the 2006 season (last road win, October 28 Arkansas-Monticello).

West Alabama opened the 2008 season with a 49-12 win over Belhaven College at Tiger Stadium. Junior college transfer Deon Williams paced the Tigers with a total of five touchdowns, four passing and one rushing. The Tigers offense put up 525 total yards, while the Red and White defense held the 2007 nation’s passing leader Blazers to 310 total yards.

Harding fell in its season opener, suffering a 45-31 loss to Missouri Southwestern in Joplin, Mo.  Missouri Southern senior quarterback Adam Hinspeter completed 26-of-45 passes for a school-record 422 yards and five touchdowns, as the Lions defeated Harding 45-31 on Saturday at Fred G. Hughes Stadium. It was Missouri Southern’s third consecutive victory over Harding and second straight in Joplin.

Saturday’s contest in Searcy, Ark. is the first of a two-game road swing in the Natural State for West Alabama. UWA will travel to Russellville, Ark. on Thursday, Sept. 11 to face Arkansas Tech in the GSC Game of the Week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
