LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama football team returns to
action on Saturday, Sept. 6, as the Tigers (1-0) travel
to Searcy, Ark. to face Harding. Kickoff at First
Security Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The game
will be carried on WZNJ 106.5-FM and at
athletics.uwa.edu. The contest can also be viewed by
accessing
www.pennatlantic.com.
Saturday’s contest
marks the 14th meeting in a series that began
in 1961. Harding holds the advantage in the series at
8-5. UWA claimed the inaugural meeting in a 14-10
victory in Livingston. HU evened the series in 1962,
before UWA won three straight. The Bisons claimed wins
in 1996 and 1999. HU has won five straight with the last
Tiger win coming in 2000.
West Alabama takes
to the road in its contest away from Tiger Stadium this
season. UWA looks to snap a six-game, road losing streak
that dates back to the 2006 season (last road win,
October 28 Arkansas-Monticello).
West Alabama opened
the 2008 season with a 49-12 win over Belhaven College
at Tiger Stadium. Junior college transfer Deon Williams
paced the Tigers with a total of five touchdowns, four
passing and one rushing. The Tigers offense put up 525
total yards, while the Red and White defense held the
2007 nation’s passing leader Blazers to 310 total yards.
Harding fell in its season opener,
suffering a 45-31 loss to Missouri Southwestern in
Joplin, Mo. Missouri Southern senior quarterback Adam
Hinspeter completed 26-of-45 passes for a school-record
422 yards and five touchdowns, as the Lions defeated
Harding 45-31 on Saturday at Fred G. Hughes Stadium. It
was Missouri Southern’s third consecutive victory over
Harding and second straight in Joplin.
Saturday’s contest in Searcy, Ark.
is the first of a two-game road swing in the Natural
State for West Alabama. UWA will travel to Russellville,
Ark. on Thursday, Sept. 11 to face Arkansas Tech in the
GSC Game of the Week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. |
