SELMA, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama closed out the
non-conference slate with a 24-7 road win over in-state
foe Concordia College in Selma on Saturday at Memorial
Stadium. UWA has claimed all four meetings between the
two schools on the gridiron.
A solid defensive
effort on both sides of the field, allowing just one
offensive touchdown combined in the contest. UWA’s
defense forced seven turnovers and scored three times
off Hornets’ miscues. The Tigers had their share of
hiccups as well with three turnovers.
The Red and White
held Concordia to just 177 yards of total offense and
held the Hornet ground attack to -17 yards on 25
carries. UWA posted 236 yards on offense with 153
through the air.
The Tigers (3-3)
jumped out to a 10-0 lead on the Hornets in the opening
half, with a 27-yard field goal from senior Mitch
Warfield and a five yard touchdown run by freshman
quarterback Derrick Thomas. UWA controlled the momentum
in the opening half, with several possessions inside CC
territory, but could only put points on the board on the
two occasions. The Tigers scoring drive started after
Octavious Sumbry picked off a Hornet pass. The
interception was Sumbry’s second recovery in the half.
He picked up a fumble at the Concordia 42 yard line
earlier in the contest.
Concordia’s (4-3)
lone points came on a blocked UWA punt by Vernon
Daniels. CC’s Frank Anthony returned the block 22 yards
into the endzone.
The Tigers extended
their lead to 17-7 by way of Garry Pack’s 30-yard fumble
recovery and run for a touchdown at the 13:19 mark of
the third period. Pack scored his second touchdown of
the day on a 26-yard interception return to seal the win
for the Red and White. Pack, from Hattiesburg, Miss.,
led UWA with 12 tackles, two for a loss and posted one
sack
UWA continues its
three-game road trip next week, traveling to Delta State
on Saturday, Oct. 11. Game time is set for 3 p.m. The
No.13 Statesmen knocked off top-ranked Valdosta State
last Thursday night in double overtime, 27-24. The
UWA-DSU contest will be aired on WXAL 1400-AM.
