LIVINGSTON, Ala. -
The new look University of West Alabama Tigers ushered
in the 2008 season with a 49-12 thumping of Belhaven
College Saturday night at Tiger Stadium. With the win,
UWA has now won two out of the last three season openers
under Bobby Wallace.
Wallace brought in a new offensive scheme to the UWA
campus after the 2007 campaign and it proved to be
positive in the opener with the Tigers putting up 35
points in the first 30 minutes of the game to cruise to
a 37-point win. The 49 points tallied in the contest was
the most since in an opening game since a 65-0 win over
Concordia to kick off the Wallace era in 2006.
The Tigers struck quickly in the opening period,
scoring on two of their first three possessions. Junior
College transfer Deon Williams connected twice with
freshman Gerald Worsham on back-to-back drives with
scoring plays from 17 and 28 yards. The Green and Gold
Blazers put their lone touchdown of the opening half on
quarterback Andrew Carcich's one-yard plunge. The Red
and White added three touchdowns in the second stanza,
two from William's to Terry Allen on plays from 48 and
36 yards. Senior Cole Mason added a touchdown in the
half, scoring from one-yard out.
Williams, from Birmingham, Ala. via East Central
Community College in Decatur, Miss., finished his first
intercollegiate game 15-of-22, 270 yards and four
touchdowns in his debut, including a 37-yard rush for a
touchdown. As a team, UWA combined for 517 yards total
offense, collecting 300 yards passing and registering
217 on the ground. Allen, a sophomore from Huntsville,
Ala. led all Tigers with 104 yards receiving on just
four receptions. The ground attack was led by junior
college transfer Dameon Baylor, who turned in a 108 yard
performance on 11 carries. The East Mississippi
Community College-product scampered 21 yards to post
UWA's final points of the night with 12:30 left to play
in the third quarter.
BC added a late third quarter touchdown from Ricardo
Bolton to close out the scoring in the contest.
UWA ventures to the state of Arkansas for the next
two games. The Tigers will square off with Harding in a
non-conference tilt on Saturday, Sept. 6. Kick off is
set for 6 p.m. on the HU campus. Following the battle
with the Bisons, UWA quickly returns to the state to
face Arkansas Tech on Thursday, Sept. 11, to kick
off the Gulf South Conference's television season
package.
