LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama football team prepares for
its 2008 season opener on Saturday, Aug. 30, as the
Tigers host Belhaven College at 7:00 p.m. in Tiger
Stadium.
The Saturday contest begins the 77th
season of Tiger Football and will mark the fourth
meeting between Belhaven and the Red and White All four
meetings between UWA and BC have come in season openers.
The game will be the first meeting since 2002, a UWA
41-14 win, between the two schools.
“We are excited about playing a
game this weekend and not just practicing against each
other,” UWA Head Coach Bobby Wallace said. “The team
knows we are preparing for an actual opponent this week
and that has turned our focus toward Belhaven. We’ve had
a good camp. We’re impressed with how Belhaven threw the
ball around last year, leading the NAIA. Anytime you
have someone who can throw, catch and run like they did
last season, it makes you a little worried for your
defense.”
Wallace is impressed with his team
this season and pleased with the surprises they’ve had
with some members.
“We’ve had some standouts on both
sides of the ball this camp. Deon Williams has done a
good job learning the new offense at the quarterback
position. Gerald Worsham will be an exciting football
player for us this season,” Wallace continued. “Jason
Hawkins has proven he is as good as we had hoped at
tight end. The additions of Javar Pollard at linebacker
and Octavious Sumbry at safety will improve our defense
and Brock Sharp has been a good addition at punter.
Tim Truss and Wil Vickery have both
changed positions with Truss moving to the offensive
line and Vickery moving to defense.
“Tim and Wil have both been big
surprises in their changes,” said Wallace.

will also be carried on 104.9-FM and at
