BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama football team was selected
seventh, by the leagues coaches, in the 2007 Gulf South
Conference Pre-Season Poll, as announced by the
conference office on Tuesday.
UWA, which is coming off its first
winning season since 1992, garnered 54 points in the
poll. North Alabama repeated as the pre-season favorite
with a total of 95 points and six first place votes.
Following the Lions are Valdosta State with 89 points
and three first place votes and Delta State with 84
points and a first place vote. Henderson State grabbed
the final first place vote for the fourth spot.
Harding sits two points ahead of
West Alabama in fifth, followed by Arkansas Tech with 55
points. Southern Arkansas and West Georgia follow UWA,
as Ouachita Baptist and UAM round out
the final two spots in the poll.
The conference also announced the
2007 Pre-Season All-GSC Team, as Mitch Warfield
represented the Tigers on the list. Warfield was a First
Team All-GSC selection last season along with an
American Football Coaches Association Division II
Coaches’ All-American.
UWA newcomers Terry Allen, Dusty
Gracie, Cole Mason and Will Roach also received
recognition as members of the 2007 Top Newcomers.
West Alabama opens its 2007 season
on Thursday, August 30th, as the Tigers
travel to Samford. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
