BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama’s
Deon Williams was selected as the Gulf
South Conference Offensive Player of the
Week for his efforts in the Tigers 33-19
win over Harding in the first GSC Game
of the Week.
This is a first
time honor for Williams as he becomes
the first UWA offensive honoree since
2002. The Tuscaloosa, Ala.-native tied a
career-high with four passing
touchdowns, while completing 21-of-29
passes (72.4 percent) for 229 yards.
Williams started the night 4-of-10 in
the first quarter, but completed 16 of
18 the rest of the night, including 13
straight completions in the victory.
Williams ranks
first in the GSC in passing yards and
total offense. The redshirt junior is
averaging 302 yards per game through the
air and 311 total yards per contest.
Williams has completed 68-percent of his
passes with seven touchdowns and an
interception through the first two
games. The UWA passing offense tops the
conference with 361 yards per outing and
is third in the conference in scoring
offense with 40 points per game.
West Alabama
returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 10
as it will host Arkansas Tech in its
second of the three consecutive GSC Game
of the Week telecasts. Kickoff is
scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The game will be
broadcasted on Comcast Sports Southeast.
The radio broadcast will be aired on FOX
Sports, WSLY 104.9 FM and
athletics.uwa.edu. UWA will also offer a
video streaming of the game through the
B2 Network.
