LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama
football team held its final spring
scrimmage at Tiger Stadium in front of
approximately 600 fans on Saturday
morning as part of the 2009 Super Tiger
Day festivities.
Head Coach Bobby
Wallace overall was pleased with the
teams progress this spring.
“We are way ahead
of where we were last year at this
time,” Wallace stated. “Our progression
at the skill positions is much better
than last spring. We have depth now at
the wide receiver and running back
positions. I thought all the wide outs
and all three running backs played well
today and it shows their growth since
the beginning of the spring. I thought
Deon (Williams) was very accurate as
well as Gary Johnston at quarterback.
Wallace, who enters
his fourth season at the helm of the
Tigers, put the Red and White through
approximately 120 plays during the
morning scrimmage that included
seven-on-seven drills and live game
action.
“Our defense has
played well during practices too. I
think Vonzell Jackson has made a
difference since he was moved to
linebacker and he will only strengthen
that for us. Our secondary have made
many improvements since this spring and
I thought they covered very well today.”
West Alabama opens
the 2009 season on Thursday, August 27
in Jackson, Miss. against Belhaven
College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00
p.m.
