LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- The University of West Alabama football team has announced the signing of 26 student-athletes for the 2009 football season on Wednesday afternoon. The list includes 14 transfers and 12 high school seniors from across the southeast region.

“We are excited about this group of young men joining our football program at UWA,” Head Coach Bobby Wallace said. “We feel like we have filled some areas that will help us next season. We are excited to have a mixture of high school seniors and community college players that will help rebuild our program starting next season.”

UWA looks to improve upon its 4-7 record from the 2008 season with the addition of these student-athletes. The Tigers had two players named to the All-Gulf South Conference First Team and had a Second Team All-American, All-Region selection, Harlon Hill finalist and the NCAA Division II statistical champion for solo tackles.

West Alabama opens the season on Thursday, August 27, as the Tigers travel to Jackson, Miss. to face Belhaven. Kickoff at H.T. Newell Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
