LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama football
team improved to 2-0 on the season with
a 33-19 win over Harding in the first
Gulf South Conference Game of the Week.
The win was the Tigers first 2-0 start
since 2006, the first season under UWA
head coach Bobby Wallace.Deon
Williams threw for 229 yards and a
career-high four touchdowns in the win.
UWA as a team compiled 384 yards on 71
plays and held the time of possession at
36:42, over 13 minutes more than the
Bisons.
After going up 17-13 at the end of
three quarters, UWA took an 11 point
lead as Williams threw his third TD pass
of the game, a 19 yard completion to
Gerald Worsham. The Tigers added a
35-yard, Tyler Kimbrough field goal and
an eight-yard touchdown catch by Jason
Hawkins to close out the UWA points. HU
placed its final points of the contest
on the board with 1:13 remaining as Josh
Powell hit Terrence Davis in the back of
the endzone.
HU struck the first blow in the
contest, scoring on its first possession
of the game. The Bisons drove 53 yards
on three plays, capped by a Josh Powell
to Kale Gelles 27-yard touchdown pass.
Kimbrough put UWA on the board with
38-yard field goal to cut the lead to
7-3 at the end of the first quarter. The
field goal by the redshirt freshman
ended a six play, 41 yard drive that ate
up 2:20 on the clock.
The Tigers took the lead on a 17
play, 83 yard drive that consumed 8:28.
Williams concluded the drive on a
25-yard, touchdown pass to Michael
Townsend. Kimbrough followed with a good
extra point, giving the Red and White a
10-7 lead with less than five minutes
remaining in the first half. The Bisons
knotted the contest as time expired in
the half on a Micah Canterbury 40-yard
field goal.
Canterbury put HU on top with a 36
yard field goal to open the second half,
but a Tiger 76 yard drive placed UWA
back in front, 17-13. Williams picked up
his second touchdown pass of the game
connecting with Terry Levy on a
three-yard pass in the back of the
endzone.
West Alabama returns to action on
Thursday, Sept. 10 as it will host
Arkansas Tech in its second of the three
consecutive GSC Game of the Week
telecasts. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00
p.m. The game will be broadcasted on
Comcast Sports Southeast. The radio
broadcast will be aired on FOX Sports,
WSLY 104.9 FM and athletics.uwa.edu. UWA
will also offer a video streaming of the
game through the B2 Network.
