LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama football
team snapped a 10-game losing streak to
Arkansas Tech in a 35-30 win over the
Wonder Boys (2-1, 0-1 GSC) at Tiger
Stadium. The win improves UWA to 3-0,
the first time since 2006. The Red and
White amassed 405 yards, in the GSC
opening win, the second most yards
gained this season for the Tigers.UWA
rushed for a season-high 258 yards on 38
carries. Roosevelt Ross rushed a
team-leading 95 yards and a score.
Dameon Baylor collected 77 yards on the
ground with two touchdowns. Deon
Williams was the team’s second leading
rusher with 83 yards to go along with
his 12-of-22 night passing for 147 yards
a TD.
J. D. Douglas was the catalyst for
the Tiger defense, recording 15 total
tackles with 10 solo stops. Ricky Bell
finished the night 11 tackles.
ATU struck first on the scoreboard as
Nick Graziano connected with Frantz
Simeon for a seven-yard touchdown pass.
The reception capped a six play, 44 yard
drive. The Wonder Boys added a 22-yard
field goal by Travis Cockerham to
complete a 69 yard drive and put Tech up
10-0 with 3:40 remaining in the first
quarter. Terry Allen put the first Tiger
points on the board, 13 seconds later,
with an 89 kickoff return for a TD,
pulling the Red and White within three
points.
ATU scored the first rushing TD
allowed by the Tiger defense this season
on a two-yard scamper by Joby Burns.
Baylor followed with his own rushing TD
for the Red and White, a 30-yard dash
that was set up by a 40 yard reception
by Gerald Worsham from Williams. UWA
took its first lead of the game with
9:20 remaining before the intermission
as Randy Lowery escaped for a 40 yard,
touchdown reception from Williams. Tim
Childress put Tech back on top, 24-21,
with a two-yard rush that capped a 10
play, 87 yard drive.
UWA regained the lead at 28-24 on 15
yard rush by Baylor, his second TD of
the game. The score capped a nine play,
95 yard drive that took 4:07 off the
clock. UWA took a double digit lead on a
one yard run across the goal line by
Ross. The drive lasted seven plays and
covered 76 yards and devoured three
minutes off the clock. Tech pulled
within five on a six yard pass to Landon
Turner that ended an 11 play, 67 yard
drive.
West Alabama will wrap up its trio of
Gulf South Conference Game of the Week
contests on Thursday, Sept. 17 with a
conference trip to Magnolia, Ark. as UWA
will face Southern Arkansas. Kickoff in
Magnolia, Ark. is scheduled for 7:00
p.m. and be broadcasted on FOX Sports,
