Tigers rout Concordia College, 65-0

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama football opened the 2006 season in grand fashion, as the Tigers dropped Concordia College, 65-0 Thursday night at Tiger Stadium. A crowd of 6,200 witnessed not only the shutout win in the season opener, but also the beginning of the Bobby Wallace era in Livingston.

“I told the team to enjoy the feeling of winning,” Wallace said following the Tigers win. “This is a feeling to remember and build on. I was pleased with our execution of offense and defense. We haven’t scrimmaged a lot and I thought our guys had good execution for lack of scrimmage time.”

UWA tied a school record with six touchdowns in one game. The record tied a 37-year old record that the Tigers set against LSU-New Orleans.

The Tigers opened the scoring on a 29-yard field goal by Mitch Warfield. Senior running back Jerin Wright added his first of three touchdowns on the evening to give UWA a 10-0 after one quarter.

Wright added his second touchdown of night and opened a 21 point quarter for the Tigers. Josh Jones tacked on his first of two touchdowns on the evening. Kidane McBride returned a 36-yard interception for a touchdown, the first of two on the night for UWA, with 20-seconds left before the intermission gave UWA a 31-0 lead.

“I thought Kidane’s interception put the game away,” said Wallace. “That was a big play before the half and I don’t think they were able to recover from it.”

UWA added 21-points in the third quarter before the Tigers ended with a 13-point fourth quarter to ice the game for West Alabama.

The Tigers posted 509 total yards while the UWA defense held the Hornets offense to 204 yards on the night.

“Overall, I am very pleased with the outcome of the game,” Wallace said. “Our team played well. We played everyone on the sideline tonight. The starters were happy to see the second and third string guys step up and secure the shutout for us. I can’t hold my guys back. We teach them only one way to play and that is full speed.”

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, September 9th, as the Tigers travel to Jackson, Tenn. for a 1:30 kickoff against Lambuth University.
