LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West
Alabama cross country teams will open the 2008
season on Friday, Aug. 29, taking part in the
2008 Mississippi College Season Opener in
Clinton, Miss. The meet will get underway at 5
p.m. with the women’s 5K followed by the men’s
5K at 5:30 p.m. at the Choctaw Trails course.
There will
be a host of new faces as the Tiger women
rebuild their program.
“I think we
have signed a very solid recruiting class this
year,” said UWA head coach Don Medeiros. “We
should be improved over the last two years. This
signing class consists of a group of runners
that have experienced success in both cross
country and track and have the ability to
continue that success at the collegiate level”.
The UWA men
are led by returning sophomores Austin Enriquez
and Jonathan Sellers. Enriquez earned All-Gulf
South Conference First Team honors last year
with a top 10 finish at the conference meet,
while Sellers finished 17th to earn
Second Team All-GSC honors.
“Both
Jonathan and Austin had good summer training and
look ready to pick up where they left off last
year,” added Medeiros. “Both are capable of
placing higher in the conference meet this year
as we look to improve upon last year’s
sixth-place standing”.
Following
the season-opening weekend, the UWA squads
return to action on Sept. 13, at the Memphis
Twilight event in Memphis, Tenn.
