UWA to Host GSC East Leading Wolves

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women’s basketball team looks to build on its 66-58 win at the University of Alabama in Huntsville over the weekend as it hosts Gulf South Conference East Division leader West Georgia on Thursday, Feb. 12. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The game will be streamed over the internet on the B2 Network and live stats will be available at athletics.uwa.edu.

UWA (8-14, 2-4) will try to avenge a 62-38 loss at UWG (17-5, 7-1) earlier this season. In the setback at The Coliseum, the Tigers turned the ball over 33 times leading to 30 of the Wolves 62 points. Valerie Harris led UWA with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, her fourth career double-double.

UWA forced 23 UAH miscues and scored 23 points off of the turnovers in its win over the Lady Chargers. The loss snapped a four game losing skid and gave the Red and White its first road win of the season. Harris led UWA with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The double-double was the sixth of the Lake, Miss-native’s, career. Omeshia Frost and Danielle Baldwin also tallied double figures for the Tigers with 16 and 11 points respectively.

UWG enters the contest riding a six game win streak, including a 63-60 overtime win over in-state rival Valdosta State on Saturday. The trio of Dominic Cranford, Tia Jackson and Ashley Huff continued their double figure scoring efforts in the win over the Lady Blazers. Cranford paced UWG with 21 points as Huff supplied 17 and Jackson rounded out the effort with 15 points.

UWA’s Harris ranks eighth in the GSC in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Cranford leads the way for the Wolves with 18.4 points per game, which is second in the conference, while Huff ranks second in the GSC in rebounds with 9.1 boards per game.

West Alabama will host North Alabama in the Pink Zone Game on Saturday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. The UWA women’s basketball team is accepting pledges for every 3-pointer made in the game against UNA, with all proceeds going to the Kay Yow/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Cancer Fund. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game as part of the NCAA “Pink Zone” campaign.
