LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The University of West Alabama
women’s basketball team returns to action on
Monday, February 11, as the Tigers (9-12, 4-2
Gulf South Conference) host divisional and
in-state rival North Alabama in GSC play.
Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. The game can be
followed via live stats at athletics.uwa.edu.
All fans are encouraged to wear pink to contest,
as the Tigers are hosting a “Think Pink” fund
raiser to raise money for the Kay Yow/Women’s
Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Cancer
Fund. Those wearing pink to the contest will
receive free admission into the game.
UWA enters the
contest riding a three-game win streak, its
longest of the season. The Red and White claimed
a dramatic 76-75 win over non-conference foe
Mobile on Tuesday, February 5 at Pruitt Hall.
Ashton
Washington and Jessica Thompson continue to lead
the Tigers in the scoring column, with both
averaging double figures. Washington, a
Lexington, Miss.-native, is averaging 13.7
points an outing, while Thompson, a native of
Valhermoso Springs, Ala., is supply a 12.6 a
contest this season. Washington is also pacing
the Red and White on the glass with 9.3 rebounds
a game. Two newcomers are also pushing forward
in the scoring column for the Tigers. Dominique
Whitfield and Valerie Harris are each averaging
just under nine points a game this season, with
Whitfield averaging 8.8 and Harris turning 8.9 a
game.
North Alabama
enters the contest on Monday night riding a win
streak of its own, claiming victories in its
last two outings, including a 75-69 win at
Montevallo on Saturday evening.
For the Lions,
Amber Rutherford leads the way. The Hatton,
Ala.-native, Rutherford, is averaging a
team-leading 16 points and 6.5 rebounds, second
on the team, a game. Shay Ashford is the
catalyst on the boards for UNA with 6.9 an
outing, to go along with her nine points a
night.
This marks the
second meeting this season between the two
in-state institutions, as UWA claimed a 72-51 in
Florence. The Red and White took command of the
contest early, pushing out to a 20-point lead in
the first half. Four Tigers scored in double
figures led by 13 from Thompson. Jenni Thomley,
Irimar Hernandez and Omeshia Frost each supplied
11 points in the contest to round out the
scoring.
The UWA
women’s basketball team is accepting pledges for
every 3-pointer made in the game against UNA,
with all proceeds going to the Kay Yow/WBCA
Cancer Fund. UWA will recognize breast cancer
survivors during halftime of the contest versus
the Lions.
