LIVINGSTON, Ala. – All four
University of West Alabama women’s
basketball seniors scored in their final
game at Pruitt Hall, as the Tigers
(13-14, 8-4 Gulf South Conference)
defeated Montevallo, 79-62, on Saturday
afternoon. All 11 UWA players scored in
the contest, led by 19 points by Valerie
Harris, who also recorded a team-leading
seven rebounds.
Dominique Whitfield and Danielle Baldwin
each totaled 12 points to round out the
double digit producers for UWA. Ashton
Washington led the seniors in scoring
with six points, as Jessica Thompson
added five with two a piece coming from
Irimar Hernandez and Ayonna Procter.
After
having their double digit lead cut to
seven with 11:30 remaining, UWA used a
12-0 run to reach its largest lead of
the contest, 19 points, led by six
points from Whitfield during the streak,
to break the game open for the Tigers.
UM (6-21, 2-10 GSC) cut the lead down to
as many as 14 points, but the Red and
White allowed the Lady Falcons no
closer, winning by 17 points.
UM and
UWA exchanged leads in the early going
of the contest before the Tigers took a
five point lead with just over 10 to
play in the opening half. The Tigers
extended their lead to double digits, 11
points; behind a 9-3 run that was capped
by Whitfield. UM cut into the Tiger
margin behind a 9-4 dash, cutting the
deficit to six points, 32-26, with 3:54
remaining in the first half, but a 10-5,
answering run by UWA pushed the lead
back out to double figures at the
intermission.
West
Alabama returns to action on Thursday,
March 6, as the Tigers, who clinched the
#3 seed in the East, will face #10
Arkansas Tech, the #2 seed from the
West, in the Quarterfinals of the GSC
Women’s Basketball Tournament. Tip-off
is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
