LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of
West Alabama women’s basketball team had its
season concluded on Thursday afternoon in
the Gulf South Conference Women’s Basketball
Tournament, as the Tigers fall to Arkansas
Tech, 76-69, in the DeSoto Civic Center. UWA
finishes the season 13-15 on the year and
8-5 in GSC play.
Senior
Ashton Washington led the Tigers with 20
points, as Valerie Harris and Jessica
Thompson each added 11 points to round out
the double figure scoring producers. Harris
paced UWA with nine rebounds, as Washington
grabbed eight.
UWA, which
forced Arkansas (24-4) into 20 turnovers,
was not able to capitalize and overcome an
early first half deficit. With UWA trailing
12-9, ATU used an 8-0 run to push out to a
20-9 lead on a pair of free throws from
Amana Grappe with 13:22 remaining in the
opening stanza.
Falling
behind by 15 points in the second half, the
Red and White cut the lead down to four
points, 56-52, on a shot by Danielle Baldwin
with 6:48 remaining in the contest. The
deficit was the closest UWA had been since
the Tigers trailed 34-29 with just over two
minutes remaining before the break. The
Tigers hung around with the Golden Suns, but
couldn’t push past ATU in the closing
minutes of the outing.
The loss
concludes the careers of seniors Washington,
Jessica Thompson, Irimar Herandez, and
Ayonna Procter.
