UWA Treks to Valdosta State for Pivotal GSC East Battle

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women’s basketball team travels to Valdosta, Ga. on Thursday, Feb. 19 to face Valdosta State. Gulf South Conference Tournament berths lay in the balance, as the two GSC East Division members battle for position in Southaven, Miss. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcasted on WZNJ 106.5-FM and video from the contest will be available at www.vstateblazers.tv.

UWA (9-15, 3-6) enters the contest having claimed a significant 69-64 win over in-state foe North Alabama over the weekend. Four Tigers scored in double figures led by Valerie Harris’ 15 points. Omeshia Frost tallied 14 followed by 13 points from Jessie Clark. A New Market, Ala.-native, Clark led the Red and White on the week, averaging 13 points in the two contests. Danielle Baldwin rounded out the double digit performers against the Lions with 11 points.

The Tigers are currently in a three-way tie for fourth with West Florida and Montevallo. The Red and White will conclude the regular season at UM on Feb. 28 and will host the Argos on Saturday, honoring its three seniors, Baldwin, Frost and Harris, prior to tip-off.

In the first meeting against the Lady Blazers, UWA dropped a five-point decision, 58-53, at Meridian Community College. Harris paced the Tigers in the setback with 17 points while Keiara Middleton added 14 points. Brittany Hudson led VSU with a 15 point, 15 rebound night. UWA looks to snap a five game skid against the Lady Blazers and get its first win on VSU’s home floor since Jan. 24, 2004.

Harris leads UWA in scoring and rebounding with 15.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, which ranks eighth in the GSC. The senior has scored in double figures 22 of the Tiger’s 24 games this season, including five double-doubles. Last weekend, the Lake, Miss.-native averaged 12.5 points and seven boards.

Michelle Thompson paces VSU in scoring with 11.3 points per game, while Tamika Booker leads the way on the glass for the Red and Black with 8.1 rebounds per contest, which is third in the conference.
