LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of
West Alabama women’s basketball team
travels to Valdosta, Ga. on Thursday,
Feb. 19 to face Valdosta State. Gulf
South Conference Tournament berths lay
in the balance, as the two GSC East
Division members battle for position in
Southaven, Miss. Tip-off is set for 5:00
p.m. CST. The game will be broadcasted
on WZNJ 106.5-FM and video from the
contest will be available at
www.vstateblazers.tv.
UWA
(9-15, 3-6) enters the contest having
claimed a significant 69-64 win over
in-state foe North Alabama over the
weekend. Four Tigers scored in double
figures led by Valerie Harris’ 15
points. Omeshia Frost tallied 14
followed by 13 points from Jessie Clark.
A New Market, Ala.-native, Clark led the
Red and White on the week, averaging 13
points in the two contests. Danielle
Baldwin rounded out the double digit
performers against the Lions with 11
points.
The
Tigers are currently in a three-way tie
for fourth with West Florida and
Montevallo. The Red and White will
conclude the regular season at UM on
Feb. 28 and will host the Argos on
Saturday, honoring its three seniors,
Baldwin, Frost and Harris, prior to
tip-off.
In the
first meeting against the Lady Blazers,
UWA dropped a five-point decision,
58-53, at Meridian Community College.
Harris paced the Tigers in the setback
with 17 points while Keiara Middleton
added 14 points. Brittany Hudson led VSU
with a 15 point, 15 rebound night. UWA
looks to snap a five game skid against
the Lady Blazers and get its first win
on VSU’s home floor since Jan. 24, 2004.
Harris
leads UWA in scoring and rebounding with
15.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game,
which ranks eighth in the GSC. The
senior has scored in double figures 22
of the Tiger’s 24 games this season,
including five double-doubles. Last
weekend, the Lake, Miss.-native averaged
12.5 points and seven boards.
Michelle Thompson paces VSU in scoring
with 11.3 points per game, while Tamika
Booker leads the way on the glass for
the Red and Black with 8.1 rebounds per
contest, which is third in the
conference.
