CARROLLTON, Ga. – Turnovers plagued the
University of West Alabama women’s
basketball team, as UWA (5-10, 0-2) fell
62-38 in Gulf South Conference action to
West Georgia on Saturday afternoon. The 38
points tied a season-low for the Tigers.
Valerie
Harris led UWA with her third double-double
of the season and fourth of her career with
17 points and 12 rebounds. The Lake,
Miss.-native has now scored in double
figures 14 times this season with 27 career
double digit efforts.
UWG (11-4,
2-0), which capitalized on the 33 Tiger
miscues with 30 points, opened the game with
the first five points of the contest. A
Valerie Harris free throw put UWA on the
scoreboard at the 15:51 mark, but the Wolves
rattled off 11 unanswered points to take a
16-1 lead at the 13:30 left in the first
half. The Tigers began to chip away at the
lead, putting together a 9-2 run to pull
within eight points with 6:49 remaining in
the period. UWG regained its double digit
lead on a layup by Ashley Huff, who recorded
a double-double with 17 points and 10
rebounds, with 5:54 left before the half.
UWA
started the second half with a 5-2 run to
cut into the UWG lead, pulling with seven
points. The Wolves answered with a 5-0 run,
pushing the lead back out to double digits
at 34-22 and never looked back in the
contest. UWG reached its largest lead of the
game, 29 points, at the 5:22 mark.
Dominic
Cranford led UWG with 19 points in the game.
Tia Jackson added 13 points.
West Alabama returns to
action on Wednesday, Jan. 14, as UWA hosts
Concordia College. The contest marks the
first of a three-game homestand for the
Tigers. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
