LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West
Alabama women’s basketball team dropped its
third consecutive contest, falling to
Montevallo 65-57 at Pruitt Hall on Thursday
evening. With the loss, UWA stands 7-13
overall and 1-5 in the GSC.
Valerie Harris led the Red
and White with 14 points and 11 rebounds. It
marked the 19th contest in double figures
for the Lake, Miss.-native. Omeshia Frost
also tabbed in double figures scoring with
10 points in setback.
The Tigers led by eight
points at the 13:44 mark of the second half,
but a 10-0 Lady Falcon (7-14, 3-3) run,
capped by Alicia Lewis’ three, put UM up
47-45. The Lady Falcons extended their lead
to seven points, 56-49, on back-to-back free
throws from Lewis. UWA chipped away at the
lead, pulling within two points on two
occasions, the last coming at the 1:54 mark
on a jumper by Courtney McDonald. After UM
reached a five point lead in the last 30
seconds of the contest, Lewis iced the game
hitting three-of-four free throws down the
stretch.
The two in-state foes
exchanged the lead several times over the
first four minutes of the outing before UM
took a 13-8 lead with 14:54 remaining before
the break. A 13-2 UWA lead erased the Lady
Falcons scoring margin, putting the Tigers
up 21-15 with 8:30 before intermission. UWA
pushed out to as many as 12 points, capped
by a trey from Erin Courington with 2:32
remaining in the first half. A 6-0 UM run in
the final minutes of the opening stanza
narrowed the UWA margin to 34-28 at the
half.
UM’s Lewis finished with 26
points. Katie Vanderhyden paced the Lady
Falcons on the glass with eight rebounds.
