The University of West Alabama women’s
basketball team posted a season-high 75
points in a 75-67 win over Southern
Arkansas in the second day of the West
Florida Holiday Classic on Tuesday
afternoon. The point total came behind a
51.9 shooting percentage from the floor,
also a season-high for UWA (4-8).
Four Tigers
recorded double figures in the scoring
column, led by Valerie Harris and
Danielle Baldwin’s 16 points. Jenni
Thomley and Omeshia Frost each tallied
12 points for UWA. Harris led the Red
and White on the glass with eight
rebounds, followed by seven boards by
Thomley.
UWA, which led by
three at the half, opened the second
half on a 13-2 run to reach its largest
lead, 14 points, with 15:32 remaining in
the game. Harris, a Lake, Miss.-native,
led the charge with six points during
the run. A 10-4 SAU dart trimmed the
Tiger’s lead to six points, but UWA
pushed the margin back out to 13 points
on two different occasions. The Lady
Muleriders again pulled within six with
20 seconds remaining, but Keiara
Middleton picked up two of her eight
points, knocking down two free throws to
give UWA the eight point win.
The Tigers opened
the contest on a 19-9 run, capped by a
trey from Thomley with 11:45 remaining
in the opening stanza. SAU narrowed the
lead to 26-23, with seven minutes
remaining before the intermission,
before pulling within one point at the
two and a half minute mark. Erin
Courington hit a jumper with 2:14
remaining before the break to give the
Tigers their 36-33 halftime lead.
Goldie White led
all scorers with 18 points and eight
rebounds. Kmaria Hobbs tallied 14 points
to round out the double digit producers
for the Lady Muleriders.
West Alabama
returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 3,
as the Tigers host Christian Brothers.
Tip-off at Pruitt Hall is set for 2:00
p.m.
