PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West
Alabama women’s basketball team earned its
first victory of the season, as UWA (1-5)
defeated Livingstone College, 68-64, in the
first game of the West Florida Classic.
Three Tigers posted double figures in the
contest, led by Valerie Harris’
double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Omeshia
Frost and Jenni Thomley rounded out the
double digit efforts. Frost tied Harris with
15 points, as Thomley added 10 points.
UWA, which
never trailed in the second half, shot
41.5-percent from the floor, on the night,
and 43.8 from behind the arc.
The Lady
Blue Bears (2-3, 0-1 CIAA) tied the game at
36-36 with 18:33 remaining in the game. UWA
answered with an 8-3 dash to take a five
point lead with just under 16 minutes to
play on a jumper by Harris. LC cut the lead
down to one point with 12:30 left to play,
but the Tigers again pushed the lead back
out to double digits, behind an 18-8 run,
that was capped by a trey from Danielle
Baldwin. Baldwin finished with eight points.
LC narrowed the lead to two with just over a
minute to play, but a pair of free throws
from Harris ended the comeback attempt.
LC opened
the contest with the first four points and
held the lead until the 13:11 mark, as
Baldwin scored on a layup to give UWA a
12-11 lead. The Tigers increased their lead
to eight with 11:06 remaining, behind a 7-0
run. UWA expanded its lead to as many as 11
points, 30-19, with 5:43 remaining in the
opening half. A 14-6 LC run to end the half
cut UWA’s lead to 36-33.
West
Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Dec.
6, as the Tigers face Eckerd College in the
second day of the West Florida Classic.
Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The game
