PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West
Alabama women’s basketball team pulled off
its second victory of the season with a
59-58 win over Eckerd College on day two of
the West Florida Classic. The back end of a
pair free throws by Danielle Baldwin secured
the win for the Tigers (2-5).
After
Eckerd knotted the game at 58 all with 36
seconds to play, Baldwin went to the line
and connected on the second free throw with
4 ticks to play in the game. Baldwin
finished with five points in the game.
Valerie
Harris led UWA with 17 points in the game,
as Omeshia Frost pulled down a team-leading
five rebounds.
The Red
and White erased a 10 point deficit in the
second half to take its first lead of the
final session on a jumper by Jessie Clark
with 12:22 left in the game. UWA increased
its lead by as many as six with seven and
half to play on a layup by Keiara Middleton.
EC knotted the game twice down the stretch.
UWA opened
with a 7-2 spurt, capped by a trey from
Jenni Thomley at the 17:31 mark. EC took its
first lead of the game with 15:11 to play in
the opening stanza behind a 9-2 run. The
Tritons extended their lead to as many as
nine points, 31-22, with just under five
minutes to play before the break. A 7-1 run
by the Red and White narrowed the deficit to
three points, 32-29, capped by Baldwin’s
three-pointer.
The Red
and White shot 42.3-percent from the field
in the game, as EC shot 41.1-percent. The
Tigers also held the advantage in the
turnover margin with 20 and forcing the
Tritons into 25 errors.
West
Alabama returns to action on Tuesday, Dec.
9, as the Tigers travel to Memphis, Tenn. to
face Gulf South Conference West Division foe
Christian Brothers in non-conference action.
Tip-off at Canale Arena is set for
5:00 p.m. UWA leads the series against CBU
7-4 and won the last outing 60-51 in
Livingston.
