The University of West Alabama women’s
basketball team dropped a 67-54 decision to
Delta State in its home opener on Tuesday
afternoon. The Lady Statesmen even their
record at 4-4, while UWA falls to 0-3 on the
season.
Two Tigers posted double
figures, led by Keiara Middleton’s 12
points, followed by 11 from Jenni Thomley.
Valerie Harris finished with nine points and
a team-leading, eight rebounds. DSU’s Moe
Bell led all scores with 20 points with
LaMaesha McAdory adding 10 points and a
team-leading nine boards.
UWA jumped out to a 6-2 lead
to open the game, but saw its lead dwindle
to a seven point deficit at the 10:57 mark.
The Tigers rallied, behind an 8-0 run to
take the lead at 17-16 with 8:39 left to
play before the break. A 15-8 rally gave DSU
a six point lead, but the Tigers pushed five
points on the scoreboard to narrow the
margin to one at the intermission, 31-30.
DSU opened the second half
with a 10-2 run. UWA answered with a 10-2
run of its own to cut the lead back to one,
behind baskets from Middleton, Danielle
Baldwin and Courtney McDonald. That would be
as close as the Tigers would get, as DSU
reached its first double digit deficit lead
of the game, 54-43, with 6:11 remaining.
West Alabama returns to
action on Friday, Nov. 28, as the Tigers
travel to Dahlonega, Ga. for the North
Georgia hosted, Lady Saints Classic. UWA
will open the Classic against host North
Georgia at 6:00 p.m.
