LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama
women’s basketball team tied its
season-high in scoring, holding off
Christian Brothers 75-68 on Saturday
afternoon. The win was the second
straight for the Tigers, who
improved to 5-8 on the season.
Danielle
Baldwin led UWA in scoring with a
career-high 20 points. Valerie
Harris added 18 points, while Keiara
Middleton and Jenni Thomley tallied
11 and 12 points respectively.
Thomley tied Omeshia Frost for the
team lead in rebounds with seven
each.
UWA, which shot
47.6-percent from the floor on the
game, the second highest percentage
this season, never trailed in the
game.
The Tigers
rushed out to a 10 point lead, 14-4,
with 14:07 to play in the first
half, capped by a pair of free
throws from Thomley. The Lady Bucs
reduced the lead to 14-12; behind an
8-0 run that elapsed nearly two
minutes off the clock. The Red and
White pushed the margin back out to
nine points on two occasions, the
last coming with 1:36 to play in the
opening stanza, before taking a
39-27 lead at the intermission.
UWA expanded on
its half lead, reaching its largest
lead of the game, 18 points, with
12:35 remaining to play, capped by
two of Kiara Parker’s four points.
The Tigers held the double digit
lead until the 5:33 mark, when
Tanaeya Worden connected on a trey
to cut the lead to 68-65. CBU
managed to narrow the deficit to two
points on two occasions, but could
not overtake the Red and White. UWA
hit four of its six free throws,
along with a layup by Frost, over
the final minute to secure the win.
The Tigers
forced CBU into 19 turnovers,
scoring 18 points off the Lady Buc
miscues. UWA also held a 12-4
advantage in fast break points and a
44-26 lead in points in the paint.
Tameka Wooten
led CBU in scoring with 15, while
Erin Nigh added 13 points. Crystal
Shelton posted a double-double for
the Lady Bucs with 13 points,
matching her 13 rebounds.
West Alabama
heads into Gulf South Conference
play, as the Tigers travel to
Florence, Ala. on Thursday, Jan. 8
to face North Alabama. Tip-off in
Flower’s Hall is set for 6:00 p.m.
