LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The 19th-ranked
University of West Alabama baseball team
improved to 35-8 on the season with a 9-6
win over William Carey on Wednesday at Tartt
Field.
UWA, which
ran its win streak to six games, posted
three runs in the second inning to answer
the Crusaders (30-17) one run in the first
inning. All three runs came off the bat of
Nick Wheeler, who hit his eighth homerun of
the season. The Tigers posted a four spot in
the fourth inning to extend its lead to 7-1.
WCU cut
into the Red and White lead with a run in
the fifth and two more in the sixth and
seventh innings, narrowing the lead to 7-6.
UWA replied with two runs in the bottom of
the seventh. Todd Rea hit his sixth homerun
of the season down the right field line and
five batters later, Jake DeRoy singled
through the left side to score Chris
Ransburgh.
Josh
Varner (7-0) pitched five innings in the
win, allowing two runs on four hits with
four strikeouts. Brian Burgess earned his
fourth save of the season, recording the
final out of the contest.
West
Alabama returns to action on Saturday, April
19, as the Tigers host in-state rival North
Alabama in a three-game, GSC series. First
pitch of the Saturday doubleheader is
scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
