BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
University of West
Alabama shortstop Nick Wheeler was named
Gulf South Conference East Division Player
of the Week, as announced by the conference
office on Tuesday afternoon.
Wheeler claimed his first career weekly
award from the conference following a strong
week at the dish. The Hokes Bluff,
Ala.-native recorded a hit in each contest
last week while tallying multiple RBI in
all, but one contest. The junior belted two
home runs, two doubles, a triple and drove
in 11 runs on the week with a .556 average.
Wheeler becomes the fifth Tiger to receive
weekly recognition from the GSC and it marks
the seventh time a UWA baseball player has
received a weekly honor. Tres Avans and Rob
Dahlberg have each claimed Player of the
Week laurels, while Mike Schmitt and Brandon
Dill, the only three time winner, have
received Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Tigers have secured a berth in the Gulf
South Conference Baseball Tournament for the
fifth consecutive season and have received
national recognition in the three collegiate
baseball polls along with being ranked
second in the NCAA Division II South Central
Region.
West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday,
April 23, as the Tigers host Stillman
College in a doubleheader. First pitch is
scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The games can be
followed via live stats.
