LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
A three-run eighth
inning proved to be
the difference for
the ninth-ranked
University of West
Alabama baseball
team as UWA (36-12,
14-2) completed the
sweep of West
Georgia with a 5-3
win.
The Tigers, which
claimed the Gulf
South Conference
East Division title
with a pair of wins
over the Wolves on
Saturday, honored
their five seniors
prior to the start
of the contest.
After UWG (13-33,
4-11) broke a 2-2
tie in the top of
the eighth, the Red
and White answered
with its three spot.
A Rob Dahlberg
single up the middle
scored Jeremy Finney
to tie the game at
3-3. Kevin Deese
then connected on
his 15th
homerun of the
season, a two-run
homer to right
center to break the
deadlock. UWA looked
to continue the
inning, but Kyle
Standridge, who was
pinch running for
Brian Simone, was
caught stealing home
to end the threat.
Josh Varner (8-2)
picked up the win in
a relief effort,
allowing one run on
two hits in 1 1/3
innings of action.
Brian Burgess
garnered his 11th
save of the season
with the final
inning on the mound.
The save set the
single season mark
originally held by
Brandon Wheeler in
2006. Tiger starter
Colter Millican held
the Wolves at bay in
his 6 2/3 innings of
the hill, allowing
two runs on six
hits.
UWG jumped out to a
2-0 lead in its
first at-bat, the
Red and White cut
the lead in half in
the bottom of the
second as Douglas
Frazier scored on a
Sam McCormack
sacrifice fly to
right field. Frazier
reached base on a
one out triple to
center field. The
Tigers tied the
contest in the
fourth as Frazier
scored Nick Wheeler
on a sac fly to
center. The Wolves
Daniel Henley scored
on a Jud Jones sac
fly to left field to
put the Red and Blue
up 3-2 heading into
