#17 Tigers Sweep West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The 17th-ranked University of West Alabama baseball team secured the #2 seed from the Gulf South Conference East Division, as the Tigers (42-9, 13-5 GSC) swept West Georgia on Sunday afternoon, 11-9 and 19-4.

The Red and White led 6-0 after four innings and put the contest away in the fifth with 12 runs, the most this season in a single inning for the Tigers. UWA added one more in the sixth to complete the sweep

The Wolves (28-23, 4-14 GSC) put three runs on the board in the fifth inning off back-to-back homeruns by A.J. Renfrow and Nolan Childers. UWG applied one more in the sixth.

Matt Hill (5-1) picked up the win, surrendering three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Cole Thornton and Josh Varner each pitched an inning in relief.  

UWA jumped on the scoreboard in game two of the day, when Tres Avans singled up the middle to score Rob Dahlberg, who reached on a double to left center. The Red and White added three more off a three-run homerun by Chris Ransburgh, as he pushed Matt Busbee and Clint Moody across the dish. The Tigers continued to add to their lead in the fourth inning, as Jake DeRoy doubled to right center, scoring Ransburgh and Nick Wheeler.

UWA led 7-2 after 2 ½ innings due to two, two-run homeruns in the top of the third by Wheeler and Ransburgh. The Tigers first run of the contest came, as Ransburgh doubled to right field, plating Brent Bumgarner and Busbee. Avans hit a shot under the glove of the third baseman to score Dahlberg for the first run of the top of the third.

UWG got its first two runs in the bottom of the third before the game was haulted due to lightning. The Tigers plated two more in the top of the fifth before the Wolves tallied seven runs in the final two innings to cut the lead to 11-9.

Brandon Dill (9-0) earned the win with five innings pitched, allowing two runs on four hits. Charley Kelley and Brian Burgess each pitched an inning in relief.

West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, April 30, as the Tigers travel to Stillman College to conclude the regular season. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
