#9 Tigers Host West Georgia in GSC Series Finale

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The 9th-ranked University of West Alabama baseball team returns to Gulf South Conference action as UWA (33-12, 11-2) hosts West Georgia in the final GSC series of the season. The three-game set begins on Saturday, Apr. 25 with a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. The twinbill can be heard on WZNJ 106.5-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu.

The Tigers, who split a mid-week doubleheader at Stillman on Wednesday, need a win over UWG or Valdosta State and UAH losses to clinch the top seed in the GSC East heading into the conference tournament in Millington, Tenn., May 2-6. UWA split with North Alabama in its last GSC series, which was shortened due to rain, clinching at least the #3 seed from the East.

Rob Dahlberg leads the Tigers at the plate this season. The Gilbertown, Ala.-native is batting .450 on the year with a team-best 68 hits and 49 RBI, which is second on the team. The senior first baseman is also the team leader in stolen bases with 26. Nick Wheeler is second on the team in hits with 64, while accumulating a .381 batting average and driving in 52 runs for the year, which is tops on the team. Mike Schmitt and Matt Hill each enter the weekend with identical 8-2 records on the mound. Schmitt leads the team in innings pitched with 72, while amassing a 3.62 ERA and recording 48 strikeouts, which is second on the team. Hill leads the team in strikeouts with 58 and has tallied a 3.51 ERA in 66.2 innings on the bump.

UWG (13-30, 4-8) has dropped its last seven contests, most recently a 10-9 loss at North Georgia on Tuesday. The Wolves have stumbled in their last four GSC outings, falling to Montevallo in the final game of its series and then swept by UAH last weekend. Daniel Henley leads UWG at the plate, batting .389 with a team-leading 51 hits and 22 hits. Cory Watts paces the Wolves’ pitching staff with 54 innings on the hill and a 5.83 ERA along with a team-leading 40 strikeouts.

The weekend series will conclude on Sunday, Apr. 26 with a scheduled nine-inning contest beginning at 1:00 p.m. UWA will honor its five seniors prior to the start of the game. The game will be broadcasted on the internet at www.MyWin98.com.
