LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
10 runs in
the first two innings led the 20th-ranked
University of West Alabama baseball team to
a 13-3, seven inning win over West Florida
in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday
evening at Tartt Field. The double digit
runs mark the 17th time this season the
Tigers (31-8, 6-4 GSC) have placed double
figures on the scoreboard.
UWA placed four runs on the
board in the first inning and six in the
second to jump out to an early 10-1 lead.
The 10 runs are the most scored by UWA in
its first two at bats this season.
After Tres Avans hit a
single through the right side to score
Jeremy Finney, Todd Rea followed with a
three-run homerun to right center to
complete the opening inning scoring. UWF
(18-24, 4-6 GSC) placed a run on the board
in the second inning, but the Red and White
answered with the six spot in the bottom of
the inning.
Finney singled to left
field, following a Jake DeRoy leadoff
double, to score DeRoy. Avans then doubled
to center field to score Dahlberg and
Finney. Following an Argo pitching change,
Matt Busbee singled through the right side
to score Avans. A Nick Wheeler two-run homer
to center field rounded out the scoring for
the Tigers in the second.
UWF plated another run in
the third, but UWA answered with two in the
fourth inning. Brent Bumgarner scored on a
Kevin Deese, who later scored on a wild
pitch, single to right field.
The Argos tried to extend
the game in the seventh inning, scoring one
run, but Clint Moody scored a Busbee single
to right center to ice the contest.
Mike Schmitt (8-1) pitched
all seven innings, surrendering just five
Argo hits with a career-high tying 10
strikeouts.
#20 West Alabama concludes
the series with West Florida in a
doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for
12:00 p.m. The game is scheduled to be
