#20 UWA Blasts West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – 10 runs in the first two innings led the 20th-ranked University of West Alabama baseball team to a 13-3, seven inning win over West Florida in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday evening at Tartt Field. The double digit runs mark the 17th time this season the Tigers (31-8, 6-4 GSC) have placed double figures on the scoreboard.

UWA placed four runs on the board in the first inning and six in the second to jump out to an early 10-1 lead. The 10 runs are the most scored by UWA in its first two at bats this season.

After Tres Avans hit a single through the right side to score Jeremy Finney, Todd Rea followed with a three-run homerun to right center to complete the opening inning scoring. UWF (18-24, 4-6 GSC) placed a run on the board in the second inning, but the Red and White answered with the six spot in the bottom of the inning.

Finney singled to left field, following a Jake DeRoy leadoff double, to score DeRoy. Avans then doubled to center field to score Dahlberg and Finney. Following an Argo pitching change, Matt Busbee singled through the right side to score Avans. A Nick Wheeler two-run homer to center field rounded out the scoring for the Tigers in the second.

UWF plated another run in the third, but UWA answered with two in the fourth inning. Brent Bumgarner scored on a Kevin Deese, who later scored on a wild pitch, single to right field.

The Argos tried to extend the game in the seventh inning, scoring one run, but Clint Moody scored a Busbee single to right center to ice the contest.

Mike Schmitt (8-1) pitched all seven innings, surrendering just five Argo hits with a career-high tying 10 strikeouts.

#20 West Alabama concludes the series with West Florida in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The game is scheduled to be carried on Y-104.9-FM and athletics.uwa.edu.
