MONTEVALLO,
Ala. – The University
of West Alabama baseball team
completed the series sweep of
Montevallo on Sunday afternoon with
a 15-8 win at Kermit A. Johnson
Field. The win also was the 300th
at UWA for Tiger skipper Gary
Rundles.
Leading 4-3 after four innings, UWA
(20-8, 5-0 GSC) blasted seven runs
on the board in the fifth inning to
blow the contest open at 11-3. Kevin
Deese led off the scoring with his
second homerun of the game with a
shot down the right field line. The
leadoff homer was his fourth of the
season. Deese’s first homer of the
game put UWA up 3-1 in the third
inning with a two-run round-tripper
to right field that scored Rob
Dahlberg.
After Nick Wheeler scored on a bases
loaded walk to put the Red and White
up 6-3, following Deese’s leadoff
homer, Dallas Rogers doubled down
the right field line to score
Douglas Frazier and Brian Simone.
Jeremy Finney capped the scoring in
the frame, crossing the dish on a
Dahlberg ground out.
After UM plated two runs in the
bottom of the inning, the Tigers
added three more on the board.
Rogers singled to right field to
score Frazier for the first run of
the sixth and two batters later
Dahlberg singled up the middle,
scoring Finney and Rogers for a 14-5
lead. The Falcons answered with
three in the bottom of the frame.
Josh Varner (6-1) grabbed the win in
relief, toeing the rubber for the
final 3 2/3 innings. The Brandon,
Miss.-native allowed just three hits
with three strikeouts. UWA starter
J. B. Black pitched four innings,
allowing three runs on four hits
with four walks and four punch-outs.
Dom Sapp tossed 1 1/3 innings in
relief of Black and surrendered five
runs on five hits with four walks.
West Alabama returns to action on
Wednesday, March 25, as UWA hosts
Auburn Montgomery at 4:00 p.m. The
