LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama
baseball team swept the
University of Alabama in
Huntsville on Sunday afternoon
at Tartt Field. UWA (16-8, 2-0
GSC) turned back the Chargers
(17-5, 0-2) in the opening game
of the doubleheader 6-4 and
claimed the night cap by a score
of 8-4. The pair of wins extends
UWA’s win streak to five.
A Nick
Wheeler double in the Tigers'
first at-bat in the opening game
drove in the first two runs of
the game, as Kevin Deese and
Jeremy Finney crossed the dish.
UWA plated an additional run in
the third inning on a Brian
Simone single to center field
that scored Deese. UAH tallied
its first run of the contest in
the fourth inning, cutting the
lead to 3-1. UWA answered with a
run in the bottom of the frame
as Jody Morgan scored on a
Finney single to left field.
Simone connected on a solo
homerun in the fifth inning to
extend the lead to 5-1. After
UAH added two in the sixth to
narrow the lead to 5-3 in the
sixth inning, a Deese sacrifice
fly to center field scored
Rogers. UAH poked one run across
the dish in the seventh, but
couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Mike
Schmitt (5-1) pitched 6 1/3
innings in the win, allowing
three runs on five hits with six
strikeouts and two walks. JB
Black logged his first save of
the season with an inning in
relief. Dom Sapp pitched 1 2/3
innings in middle relief,
allowing a run on two hits with
a punch-out.
In game
two, the Tigers amassed all
eight runs in the first three
frames of the contest. Deese
homered down the right field
line in the first inning to
tally the first run of the game.
After Simone crossed the plate
for the first run of the second
inning, Rogers doubled down the
left field line to score Bryan
Mason and Douglas Frazier for
4-0 lead. Deese cranked his
second round tripper of the game
to leadoff the third inning. The
final two runs of the four spot
in the inning came as Rogers
doubled again down the left
field line to score Mason and
Sam McCormack.
UAH posted
three runs in the fifth inning
and one more in the sixth before
falling to 0-2 in the
conference.
Matt Hill
(4-2) tossed five innings in the
win, allowing four runs on seven
hits with three strikeouts.
Brian Burgess threw the final
two innings in relief with two
strikeouts.
West
Alabama returns to the diamond
on Wednesday, March 18, as the
Tigers face Delta State in
Pearl, Miss. First pitch is
scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at
Trustmark Park. The game will be
broadcasted on WZNJ 106.5-FM.
