TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 12th-ranked
University of West Alabama baseball team
tuned up for the 2008 Gulf South Conference
Baseball Tournament with a mid-week sweep of
in-state foe Stillman College on Tuesday on
the SC campus. The Tigers blanked SC 14-0
in the first game and 19-0 in the finale.
With
the pair of double-digit wins, UWA has now
put double digit runs on the board in 23
contests this season and moved its streak of
consecutive double figure run totals to
six-straight games. With the 33 runs scored
in the twinbill, the Tigers have posted 481
runs on the season, shattering the school
record for runs in a season. The previous
mark was 467 held by the 1999 squad.
In the
opener, Junior Jeremy Finney and Jeremy
Dorrance each registered three RBI to pace
the squad in the opener. Finney turned in a
2-for-4 performance at the plate while
Dorrance’s big hit came in the UWA half of
the sixth. The Decatur, Ala.-native hit an
inside the park home run to left field. The
Red and White turned the three-run affair
into a 10-0 lead after five innings. Kasey
Nafzger moved to 6-1 with a five-inning
outing on the hill, scattering four hits and
striking out five. Josh Turner finished the
final two frames, recording four strike
outs.
UWA’s
bats continued to sizzle against SC pitching
in the night cap, scoring 19 runs off 11
hits and took advantage of four miscues by
the home team. The Tiger pitching staff
limited SC to just two hits in the
seven-inning affair. Josh Varner kept his
unblemished record intact with a two-inning
stance on mound with two strike outs. A
trio of Tigers had three RBI performances,
led by senior Todd Rea. Rea was credited
with two hits and also scored twice.
Phillip Merryman and Matt Busbee finished
with three RBIs.
UWA returns to the
diamond on Saturday, May, 3, taking part in
the Gulf South Conference Baseball
Tournament in Millington, Tenn. The Tigers
open the eight-team tournament against
Ouachita Baptist, the third seed from the
West. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30
