The 23rd-ranked
University of West Alabama baseball
team run-ruled No. 28 St.
Joseph’s (Ind.) 13-3 on Sunday
afternoon to improve to 8-6 on the
season. The win secured a 2-2 record
on the weekend.
The
Tigers bombarded SJC in its first
at-bat, pasting six runs on the
board. Rob Dahlberg pushed the first
run across the board, doubling down
the left field line to score Jeremy
Finney, who led-off with a double to
left. Wheeler rounded the bases
after a single up the middle and a
three base error by the Puma
centerfielder that also scored
Dahlberg. Two batters later, Kevin
Deese singled to right field to
score Brian Simone, who reached on a
single. With bases loaded and two
down, Finney gathered his second hit
of the day, doubling down the left
field line to plate Sam McCormack
and Deese.
UWA added
another run in the third inning, two
more in the fourth and another in
the fifth to take a 10-0 lead. SJC
(5-2) tried to pull back into the
contest, plating three runs in the
sixth inning, but the Tigers
answered with three runs of their
own in the home half of the inning.
With one down and runners in scoring
position, Wheeler singled to left
field to score Dahlberg and Dallas
Rogers. After stealing second,
Wheeler would become the final run
for the Red and White of the game,
scoring on a Clint Brown single to
left field.
Josh
Varner (2-1) picked up the win on
the mound with five innings of work.
The sophomore, allowed just two hits
with five walks and three
strikeouts. John Ashley threw 1/3 of
an inning, allowing three runs on
three hits. JB Black closed out the
game with 1 2/3 inning works with
two punch-outs on the bump.
West
Alabama returns to action on
Wednesday, Feb. 25, as UWA travels
to Stillman College. First pitch is
scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
