INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The 19th-ranked
University of West Alabama baseball team
opens the first NCAA Division II South
Central Region Poll ranked second, as
released by the NCAA Thursday afternoon. UWA
is 34-8 overall this season and 8-4 in the
Gulf South Conference.
The
Tigers, which are 20-6 in the region, are
currently riding a six-game win streak. The
Red and White need just two GSC wins to
clinch a spot in the conference tournament
in Millington, Tenn.

Southern Arkansas (36-4) holds the top spot
in the region poll with a 28-3 record in
region play. Delta State (32-8) is third
with a 22-8 region record.
Abilene Christian (32-13) holds the
fourth spot followed by 2007’s top seed
Ouachita Baptist (37-10) in fifth. St.
Edward’s, Angelo State and Southeastern
Oklahoma respectively round out the six
through eight spots in the poll.
Tournament
champions from the GSC and Lone Star
Conferences comprise two of the six bids to
the South Central Regional, May 15-18. The
remaining at-large slots are awarded to the
four, highest-ranked teams in the region
including five squads from the Heartland
Conference. The top-rated team is eligible
to host the four-day Tournament, providing
it placed a bid to host and have adequate
facilities and accommodations for teams and
fans.
#19 West
Alabama hosts in-state rival North Alabama
in a three-game series this weekend. The
series opens with a doubleheader on
Saturday, April 19, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
The series concludes on Sunday, April 20
with the opening toss scheduled for 1:00
p.m. The Sunday contest is also Senior Day
on the Livingston campus, as UWA will honor
its 10 seniors with a ceremony beginning at
12:50 p.m.
