MONTICELLO, Ark. –
The
University of West Alabama baseball
team took a pair of contests on
Saturday afternoon against the
University of Arkansas at
Monticello. UWA, which improved to
11-7 on the season, claimed the
first outing 4-3 and the second of
the twinbill 8-1.
UAM
(5-14-1) posted the first two runs
in the opening game, but in the
third inning UWA claimed the lead
with a three-run effort. Rob
Dahlberg put the Tigers on the board
with a single to left field that
scored Jeremy Finney, who led off
with a single. Jody Morgan then put
the Red and White in the lead with a
two-run, one out homerun that scored
Nick Wheeler. UWA tacked another run
on the board in the fifth inning,
when Morgan laid down a bunt single
that scored Dahlberg.
The Boll
Weevils added another run in the
bottom half of the fifth, but
couldn’t overtake the Tigers.
Mike
Schmitt (4-1) pitched the complete
seven innings, his seventh at UWA,
in the win. The senior gave up seven
hits with two walks and seven
strikeouts.
In game
two, UWA jumped out to a quick 6-1
lead through the first four innings,
scoring three in the second and
three in the fourth.
Bryan
Mason stole home for the Tigers
first run of the game. Dallas Rogers
became the second UWA run as he
scored on a wild pitch by J. Stancek.
The final run of the first came when
Wheeler singled up the middle to
score Dahlberg.
Kevin
Deese provided the big bat in the
fourth with his third homerun of the
season, which scored Wheeler.
Wheeler drove in Dahlberg for the
first run of the inning with a
single to left field.
The
Tigers added additional runs in the
fifth and sixth innings to secure
the win.
Matt Hill
(3-2) got the win, going the
distance on the bump with a
career-high 11 strikeouts.
West
Alabama concludes the series on
Sunday, March 7 with another pair of
seven innings contests. First pitch
is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
