MONTICELLO, Ark. – After
nearly 10 days after its last game,
the University of West Alabama
baseball team rallied in the ninth
inning to pick up an 18-11 win at
the University of Arkansas at
Monticello. UWA (9-7) recorded eight
of its runs in its final at-bat.
The Tigers capitalized on UAM
(5-12-1) miscues to rally for the
second time in the game. After
back-to-back singles from Jeremy
Finney and Rob Dahlberg and an
intentional walk of Nick Wheeler,
Kevin Deese tied the contest, as he
reached base on an error by the UAM
shortstop. The Tigers took the lead
on another error by the shortstop,
allowing Bryan Mason to reach base
and scoring Dahlberg. With the bases
still loaded and no outs, Clint
Brown drew a walk to plate the third
run of the inning.
Jody Morgan then cleared the bases
with a triple to right field,
putting the Red and White up 16-11.
Morgan finished the game with two
hits, four RBI and a run scored.
Mason and Dalhberg would score the
final two runs of the inning, as
they each hit sacrifice flies to
center field.
Finney and Simone also recorded
multiple RBI efforts in the contest.
Finney went 3-for-6 at the plate
with three RBI and a run scored with
Simone driving in two runs with a
run scored.
Simone started the rally in the
seventh inning with a double to
center field that scored Wheeler and
Dahlberg. Two batters later, Dallas
Rogers drew a bases loaded walk that
pushed Simone across the dish.
Finney then tripled to left field
and scored Rogers, Mason and Kyle
Moore, putting the Tigers up 9-4.
The Boll Weevils answered in the
home half of the seventh, taking the
lead back at 11-9. Matt Whiting
provided the big boom of the inning
with a grand slam homerun that
pulled UAM within one run at 9-8.
J.B. Black (1-0) picked up his first
win of the season with four innings
pitched in relief. Black allowed
seven runs on 10 hits with three
strikeouts and two walks. Colter
Millican pitched five innings in the
start, surrendering four runs on
seven hits with three punchouts and
five walks.
West Alabama returns to the diamond
on Saturday, March 7, as UWA faces
UAM in two seven inning contests.
First pitch is scheduled for 12:00
p.m. The five game series concludes
on Sunday with a pair of seven
inning outings starting at Noon.
