LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The second-ranked University of West Alabama baseball team held off Montevallo on Sunday afternoon to claim the series over the Falcons (20-13, 3-3 GSC), winning 14-13 in a slug fest at Tartt Field.

The Tigers (26-5, 5-1 GSC), which never trailed in the contest, earned their 10th consecutive series win with the victory, dating back to the 2006 season.

Sunday’s contest saw a combined eight homeruns hit, including two from Rob Dahlberg with Tres Avans, Nick Wheeler and Brent Bumgarner each taking one out of the yard. UM’s Daniel Furuto hit three homeruns in the outing.

UWA jumped out to an early 6-3 in the first inning behind a three-run homer by Avans and a two-run shot by Bumgarner. The Red and White extended its lead to 12-4 after five innings, behind the bat of Dahlberg. The Gilbertown, Ala. native doubled to left center to score Jeremy Finney in the second inning, followed by a solo dinger in the fourth inning and finally a grand slam in the fifth inning for the eight run lead after five innings.

The Falcons began to nip away at the lead, scoring two runs in the sixth and then on the bat of Furuto placed two runs on the board in the seventh, three in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

UWA starter Brandon Dill (5-0) picked up the win with 5 1/3 innings pitched. The Columbus, Miss.-native gave up six runs on nine hits, while recording nine strikeouts. Charley Kelley, native of Homewood, Ala., pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, surrendering two runs on two hits in his second save of the season.

West Alabama returns to action on Tuesday, March 25, as the Tigers host Henderson State in a non-conference, three-game midweek series. First pitch of the doubleheader on Tuesday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The double dip will be carried on Y-104.9-FM and athletics.uwa.edu.
