LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The second-ranked University of West
Alabama baseball team held off Montevallo on
Sunday afternoon to claim the series over the
Falcons (20-13, 3-3 GSC), winning 14-13 in a
slug fest at Tartt Field.
The Tigers
(26-5, 5-1 GSC), which never trailed in the
contest, earned their 10th
consecutive series win with the victory, dating
back to the 2006 season.
Sunday’s
contest saw a combined eight homeruns hit,
including two from Rob Dahlberg with Tres Avans,
Nick Wheeler and Brent Bumgarner each taking one
out of the yard. UM’s Daniel Furuto hit three
homeruns in the outing.
UWA jumped out
to an early 6-3 in the first inning behind a
three-run homer by Avans and a two-run shot by
Bumgarner. The Red and White extended its lead
to 12-4 after five innings, behind the bat of
Dahlberg. The Gilbertown, Ala. native doubled to
left center to score Jeremy Finney in the second
inning, followed by a solo dinger in the fourth
inning and finally a grand slam in the fifth
inning for the eight run lead after five
innings.
The Falcons
began to nip away at the lead, scoring two runs
in the sixth and then on the bat of Furuto
placed two runs on the board in the seventh,
three in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
UWA starter
Brandon Dill (5-0) picked up the win with 5 1/3
innings pitched. The Columbus, Miss.-native gave
up six runs on nine hits, while recording nine
strikeouts. Charley Kelley, native of Homewood,
Ala., pitched the final 1 1/3 innings,
surrendering two runs on two hits in his second
save of the season.
West Alabama
returns to action on Tuesday, March 25, as the
Tigers host Henderson State in a non-conference,
three-game midweek series. First pitch of the
doubleheader on Tuesday is scheduled for 4:00
p.m. The double dip will be carried on
