LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The third-ranked
University of West Alabama baseball team
completed a three-game, mid-week sweep
of Henderson State on Wednesday
afternoon at Tartt Field. The 12-6 win
extended UWA’s win streak to four games,
as the Tigers improved to 29-5 on the
season.
UWA jumped out
early, posting nine of its 12 runs in
the first four innings. After taking a
1-0 lead in the first inning, the Tigers
erupted with six runs in the second to
take a 7-0 lead.
Following
back-to-back singles from Nick Wheeler
and Matt Busbee, Kevin Deese hit a one
out single through the right side to
score Wheeler and move Busbee to third.
Finney followed with a triple to left
field to score Deese and Busbee and give
the Red and White a 4-0 lead. Following
walks by Rob Dahlberg and Todd Rea, Jake
DeRoy hit a two out single to right
center, scoring Dahlberg and Finney. The
final run of the inning came on a double
steal by the Tigers, as Rea scored.
UWA tallied two
runs in the fourth and fifth and one
more in the sixth to round out the
scoring in the contest for the Tigers.
Five pitchers took
the hill for the Red and White with Cole
Thornton (2-1) receiving the win.
Thornton, who relieved starter Jonathan
Sherrill, pitched 1 1/3 innings with one
strikeout. Sherrill logged his longest
outing of the season, 4 2/3 innings, in
his first start of the year, allowing
three runs on three hits with five
strikeouts.
West Alabama
returns to action on Saturday, March 29,
as the Tigers travel to Valdosta, Ga. to
face the Valdosta State in GSC East
Division play. First pitch of the
doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled
for 12:00 p.m. The game will be carried
