Tigers Journey to Delta State for Weekend Series

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team looks to bounce back from a 10-9 loss at Stillman on Wednesday afternoon, as UWA (8-7) travels to Cleveland, Miss. for a three-game series with Delta State. The series opens with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The setback in Tuscaloosa, Ala. halted a two-game win streak by the Red and White and snapped a 22-game win streak over Stillman. The decision was just the Tigers second loss away from Tartt Field on the season.

UWA is 32-74 against the Statesmen, but the Tigers have held their own in the last 10 meetings, drawing a 5-5 split. DSU picked a 9-7 win in the last meeting, closing the Tigers season in the 2008 NCAA South Central Regional in Cleveland, Miss. UWA eyes its first win at Dave “Boo” Ferriss since Feb. 28, 2004; a 10-9 victory for the Tigers.

Rob Dahlberg leads the way at the plate for UWA. The Gilbertown, Ala.-native is batting .525 on the year, which is tops in the GSC. The senior is second on the team in RBI with 14 and third in hits with 21.

Mike Schmitt paces the UWA pitching staff with a 3-1 record and 3.08 ERA. The Cheyenne, Wyo.-product suffered his first loss of the season last weekend in a 5-3 defeat to Ouachita Baptist. On the season, the senior has tossed a team-leading 26 1/3 innings while allowing nine runs on 23 hits with 13 strikeouts and holding opponent batters to a .228 batting average.

Kellen Bozeman pilots the Statesmen offensive attack with a .392 batting average. Bozeman leads the team with 17 RBI, 20 hits and four homeruns. Korey Cunningham is the ace of the staff for the Green and White with a team-leading 23 2/3 innings pitched. Cunningham is 1-1 in four appearances on the hill for the Statesmen with a 3.04 ERA and team best 20 strikeouts.

The three-game set concludes on Sunday, Mar. 1 with a scheduled first pitch of 2:00 p.m. Audio and video of the series finale can be found at athletics.uwa.edu.
