LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The 10th-ranked University of
West Alabama baseball team used 14 innings, tying a
school record, to claim the weekend series from #4
Delta State on Sunday afternoon, turning back the
Statesmen 12-11.
After trading
shots through the first four extra innings of the
contest, UWA (15-4) found itself trailing 11-10
heading into the bottom of the 14th. The
Tigers used heroics to claim the series win, as
Jeremy Dorrance, who was pinch running in the
contest, scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Jeremy
Finney. Dallas Rogers started things for the Red and
White hitting a one out single to right field,
before advancing to second on a throwing error by
the third basemen on a fielder’s choice by Chris
Ransburgh. Jake DeRoy followed with a single to the
right side, scoring Rogers and tying the contest at
11-11.
Kasey Nafzger
(1-0), the sixth Tiger hurler of the contest,
received the win on the mound, pitching 2/3 of an
inning.
After opening up
with a 5-2 advantage, due to a five-run first
inning, UWA found itself holding an 8-2 lead heading
into the eighth inning. DSU added one run in the
seventh to narrow the lead to 8-3. The Statesmen
rallied with a five-run inning of their own, in the
ninth, to tie the contest at 8-8. UWA got a Rob
Dahlberg double to start the home half of the
inning, but a Clint Moody pop up resulted in a
double play that erased Dahlberg. A Todd Rea fly out
to shortstop closed the inning and sent the contest
into extra innings.
West Alabama
