LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – After a rare
weekend off from competition due to weather, the
No. 3 ranked West Alabama Tigers swept Columbia
Union College on Tuesday at Tartt Field. The
Red and White topped the Pioneers 15-1 in the
opener and 10-3 in the seven inning night cap.
UWA, winners of five straight and a 19-4 season
mark, opened the game wide open with six runs in
the first three frames of the opening contest
with CUC (4-4). Senior Tres Avans highlighted
the scoring borage in the opening three frames.
The Tiger leftfielder belted his third home run
of the season in the fifth inning. Avans
finished the first game with three RBI and
scored two runs in the affair. The Red and White
plated six of its 15 runs in the first three
innings, scoring two in the first, three in the
second and one in the third. UWA tallied two
more runs in the fifth, before tacking four runs
in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to
close the contest.
Mike Schmitt (5-0) picked up the victory with
two innings pitched, allowing one hit and
fanning two Pioneer batters.
In the finale of the day, UWA opened the contest
with five runs in the first inning, adding two
in the fourth and three more in the fifth for
its 10-run tally. The five run inning was
ignited by Todd Rea, who the led off with a
homerun to right center. Rea finished the night
going two-for-three with two RBI and two runs
scored in the affair. Matt Busbee went
three-for-four with three RBI in the outing to
lead the Red and White at the plate. Dallas
Rogers drove in two runs in the contest with a
triple down the right field line.
Kasy Nafzger (2-0) earned the win with five
innings on the hill, allowing two hits and
striking out nine CUC hitters.
The Tigers and Pioneers close out the three-game
series with a single game on Wednesday, March
12, at Tartt Field. First pitch is set for 3
p.m. UWA opens Gulf South Conference play this
weekend, traveling to Alabama in Huntsville.
