UWA Falls 7-6 in 11 Innings at AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --  The 11th-ranked University of West Alabama baseball team had its 12-game win streak snapped its first extra inning game of the season, falling 7-6 to Auburn Montgomery in 11 innings. UWA falls to 23-9 on the season.

Trailing 6-5 after Nick Wheeler scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th, AUM (21-13) had bases loaded with one out. Bruce Alter doubled to right field to score Shane Moye and Cody Shields. The two runs snapped a five-game losing streak for the Senators against the Red and White.

Brian Burgess (1-1), who pitched two innings in relief, took the loss. The Huntsville, Ala.-native surrendered two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks. UWA starter Dom Sapp tossed three innings allowing two runs on four hits with a punch-out and three walks. Josh Varner, Colter Millican and J. B. Black combined for five innings in relief.

AUM sent the game into extra frames in the eighth inning when Brooks Glover hit a two-run homerun to left field that scored Will Stillwell and forced a 5-5 deadlock. The tie was the first of the game.

Rob Dahlberg put the Tigers up in their first at-bat, hitting a two-run homer to right field that scored Jeremy Finney, who reached on a walk. AUM cut the lead in half in its first trip to the plate, but UWA pushed the lead out to 4-1 in the second inning. Bryan Mason singled to center field to score Douglas Frazier. A batter later, Finney singled to left field to score Mason.

The Senators posted another run in the second inning, but UWA answered on a Jody Morgan round-tripper to left field. The Red and White held the 5-2 lead until the bottom of the sixth, when AUM plated a run to pull within two runs.

West Alabama returns to the diamond on Saturday, Apr. 4, as UWA travels to Pensacola, Fla. for a three-game series against West Florida.
