MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 20th-ranked
University of West Alabama baseball snapped
its three-game losing streak by blasting
three homeruns in a 6-3 win over Auburn
Montgomery on Wednesday evening at the AUM
Baseball Complex. The win marks the sixth
consecutive time UWA has garnered 30 wins
and 16th in school history.
Nick
Wheeler and Tres Avans supplied all six runs
that the Diamond Tigers (30-8, 5-4 Gulf
South Conference) needed in the contest.
Avans, a Trenton, Ga.-product, started the
scoring with a solo homer to lead off the
second inning.
The
Senators (28-12) evened the scoring in the
bottom of the inning off doubles by Cody
Shields and Daniel Jones, but UWA answered
back in the top of the fourth behind
Wheeler. The Hokes Bluff, Ala.-native
blasted a three-run dinger, scoring Avans
and Matt Busbee, to lift the Tigers up 4-1.
Wheeler then connected on a two-run,
round-tripper in his next at bat to push the
Red and White up 6-1.
AUM
managed two runs in the sixth inning to
narrow the gap, before falling 6-3.
Josh
Varner (6-0) picked up the win, throwing
three innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Jonathan Sherrill, Cole Thornton, Charles
Kelley, Adam Patterson, Clint Smith and
Brian Burgess each pitched one inning in the
contest, as Burgess earned his second save
of the season.
West Alabama returns to conference play on
Saturday, April 5, as the Tigers host West
Florida in a three-game series. First pitch
of Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for
4:00 p.m. with Sunday’s finale scheduled for
1:00 p.m. The games will be carried on
