PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West
Alabama baseball team placed three on the
American Baseball Coaches
Association/Rawlings All-South Region Teams.
Rob Dahlberg was selected to the First Team
at first base, while Nick Wheeler and Mike
Schmitt were each tabbed as members of the
Second Team.
Each
member of the First Team will be eligible
for NCAA Division II All-American
consideration, which will be selected on
Sunday, May 24, 2009 in Cary, NC in
conjunction with the Division II National
Championship Tournament.
Dahlberg,
a Gilbertown, Ala.-native, finished his
four-year career as the school’s all-time
leader in games played, at-bats, runs, hits
and stolen bases and is ranked in the top
five all-time in seven additional
categories. Dahlberg finished the 2009
season as the team leader in hits with 81
and stolen bases with 30 along with being
second on the team in RBI with 60.
Wheeler, a
native of Hokes Bluff, Ala., finished the
2009 campaign as the team leader with 64 RBI
and was third on the team in hits with 75,
while ranked second on the team in homeruns
12.
Schmitt, a
Cheyenne-Wyo.-product, racked up 90 1/3
innings on the mound in his final season
with the Tigers, which led all hurlers. The
right hander also collected 63 strikeouts,
second best on the team, while recording a
10-3 record. The 10 wins tied for most on
the team.
The trio
of baseball performers was all named to the
2009 All-Gulf South Conference First Team
earlier this season.
West
Alabama wrapped up the 2009 season with a
38-16 record. UWA earned the 2009 GSC East
Division title, earning a berth in the GSC
Baseball Tournament, and made its seventh
appearance in the NCAA Division II Baseball
Championships, grabbing the No. 3-seed in
the South Region.
